Officiating Courses

As the game progresses, the role of the umpire in helping to ensure matches are played safely and to the rules are needed at all levels of the game. The England Netball Officiating Pathway allows officials to plot their own learner journey through a range of qualifications, helping them to fulfil their officiating potential. Anyone over the age of 13 can become an official. The game doesn’t just need young umpires or technical officials. Current or ex-players with a wealth of experience at various levels make excellent officials. Irrespective of your age, ability, or experience at playing netball, if you have a passion for the game and can successfully complete England Netball’s Into Officiating or C Award Course you can start your journey to becoming a netball umpire. Into Officiating Course (Beginners Course)

Perfect for those 13 and over who want to officiate at the local level or in a school environment. After you attend the course you will:

  • Have a basic understanding of the rules of netball
  • Recognise obvious infringements
  • Apply the correct use of voice, whistle terminology
  • Be aware of correct umpire positioning
  • Be able to keep an accurate scorecard
  • Understand the requirements to progress along the officials pathway

Towards C Umpiring Course (Intermediate Course)

The C Award Umpire Course is perfect for those 13 and over who want to officiate at local level or in a school environment. After you attend the course you will:

  • Understand the role of the umpire and the qualities of a good official
  • Have a good understanding of the rules of netball
  • Recognise obvious infringements
  • Apply the correct use of voice, whistle terminology
  • Be aware of correct umpire positioning
  • Understand the concepts of managing discipline
  • Understand the requirements to progress along the officials pathway

Prerequisite: None   Duration: 6 hours   Delivery: Practical & Theory

**Course booking forms must be returned to jordan.oland@englandnetball.co.uk  The officiating pathway for the C award is as follows: 1) Attend Towards C award course 2) Practice and complete umpiring log book 3) Pass written paper and pre-assessment (Cost £10, apply here) 4) Pass Practical Assessment (Cost £45 apply here) The C written paper is valid for two years. The Pre-Assessment pass is valid for six months. Towards B Courses

Towards B courses are organised regionally. A & B Umpire Award Written Assessment

Cost: £45.00 When: Netball Europe holds written assessments across the Region three times per year on the second Saturday/Sunday of Feb, May and November. Learners for both the Netball Europe A & B Award sit the same exam which is facilitated by the county umpiring secretary. The Pass requirements differ for each Award. Match Bench Officials

Match bench officials are integral to the smooth running of any match. The updated Match Bench Officials Course has been developed by England Netball to give learners a recognised qualification in order to be a competent part of the Match Bench at regional, premier and international matches and beyond. The Match Bench Officials award consists of two elements, theory and practical and is not obtained until both elements have been completed. The theory element is organised and delivered by the region, and the practical element is delivered across the region, dependent on where individual learners and based and where suitable games can be sourced.
