Active Sussex Enews- January 2011
Netball and cycling have seen a marked increase in participation over the last two years, according to the latest figures released by Sport England.
The Active People Survey results show that the number of people regularly cycling is up by almost 100,000 over the period.
Netball’s participant numbers are up by over 26,000, an increase of a fifth in the size of the sport over two years. Much of this success is due to the Back to Netball programme, encouraging women to return to the sport.
"Our Back to Netball scheme in Littlehampton has been particularly successful," says Hannah Brooks, Netball Development Officer for Sussex. "Women have been happy to return to the sport because our sessions are indoors and very social. We've even got a Back to Netball team that now plays in the Worthing & District league."
“England Netball is immensely proud of the success of its Back to Netball scheme,” said England Netball’s Chief Executive, Paul Clark. "It has allowed us to begin to reach out to women who would never have contemplated returning to the game through more traditional structures.”
